The accident occurred at 8:55 a.m. at the Deep Springs (412) Exit on Interstate 40, when an eastbound semi tractor trailer (load containing watermelons) veered off the interstate and struck another semi tractor trailer parked (load containing tomatos) on the on ramp to East Interstate 40. The crash separated the parked tractor from its trailer, and the other semi would end up crashing down into the Dumplin Creek.
It took rescuers 30 + minutes and multiple tools for Dandridge Firefighters and Jefferson County Rescue Squad members to extricate the driver of the truck in the creek. Paramedics with the Jefferson County Emergency Medical Service were able to establish an IV and other medical procedures during the extrication. The driver and another trucker in the sleeper at the time of the crash were hauled up the embankment to ambulances using low angle rescue techniques.
